The Evolution of the Human Diet
OMG, I said the E word! Ok, let’s get beyond that and think about what we eat as humans, and what we probably should be eating. Nobody can argue that eating plants and animals is the way nature intended it to be. Humans, are omnivores, we all know that. So, it’s not that hard to convince someone that we are meant to eat meat and veggies (unless they are vegetarian, and in that case, those people were made to eat soy). What is hard, is swallowing the fact that if all you ate, was plants and animals, you’d be…weird. At least in this day and age. It’s much more common to have a Lean Cuisine (what a catchy title, eh?), a “fun-sized” pack of Doritos, and a 100 calorie pack of cookies for lunch than it is to have a salmon fillet with brussel sprouts and bacon (sorry co-workers for the fishy smells). However, what we call “normal” now, was impossible a century ago. So, how did we eat a century ago, or two centuries, or rather a thousand years ago? Ten thousand years ago? Ok, what about our ancestors a few hundred million years ago?
Click here and you will find one of Loren Cordain’s most popular research articles on evolutionary diets, eating “paleo”. Even if you don’t like reading sciency jargon like this, it’s worth a peek to look at the charts and stuff!
